Successful Dissertation Defense: Congratulations to Dr. Peder Bergan
We are delighted to announce that Peder Bergan has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His dissertation, titled “Selected Essays on Digital Transformation: A Multi-Level Perspective” offers a rich, multi-dimensional investigation of how digital transformation unfolds across organizational, systemic, and individual levels.
Peder’s cumulative dissertation includes five peer-reviewed publications, spanning topics such as:
- Project and Project Portfolio Management Capability Building
- Governance and architecture for Smart Cities
- Personal Task Management for knowledge workers
His research addresses the complexity and fragmentation of digital transformation by combining insights from information systems, organizational theory, behavioral science, and design-oriented research methods. The work reveals how success in digital initiatives often hinges not only on technology, but on the alignment between individual behavior, organizational capabilities, and systemic structures.
One of the dissertation’s central contributions is a sensemaking-based model for building project portfolio management (PPM) capabilities, developed through in-depth case studies and interviews with senior professionals across multiple industries. It also offers practical frameworks for governance in smart city initiatives and theoretical grounding for task management in knowledge-intensive work environments.
We warmly congratulate Dr. Peder Bergan on this outstanding academic achievement and wish him continued success in his professional and scholarly endeavors.
